Discover the Soennecken collection

Calligraphy as art of writing is an ever lasting branch of art. Nowadays calligraphy and typography are especially used for business communication and advertisement, to create brand names for example. The project consists of three major parts :

  1. Learning process of writing, evolution of text books.
  2. Handwriting as a drawing process, calligraphy.
  3. Alphabet, typography and printing.

A travelling exhibition consisting of old and modern pieces that belong to the collections of partner cities and the Soennecken collection in Strasbourg should show the wide spectrum of illustration and writing and cover all three parts mentioned above. The Soennecken collection is an important collection of books treating the topic from the 16th to the 20th century. It will be open to the public for the first time, thanks to the National and University Library of Strasbourg, and the heritatge funds of the library André Malraux, associated partners on this project. In addition to this collection, libraries from Arad, Barcelona, Brno and the museum of Debrecen participate by lending books to create a joint exhibition. This exhibition will then be hosted by Strasbourg, Brno, Debrecen and Arad. The collaboration will be demonstrated by a multinational team of curators: Guillaume Dégé (Superior School of Decorative Arts of Strasbourg), Agathe Bischoff-Morales (Municipal Library of Strasbourg), Fréderic Blin (National and University Library in Strasbourg), and Szabolcs Suli-Zakar (Medgyessy Ferenc School of Debrecen).

Acquire collections from the Soennecken funds of the National and University Library of Strasbourg (France), from the library "A.D. Xenopol" Arad County Library (Romania), from the consorci de Bibliotheques de Barcelona (Spain), from the library Jiri Mahen of Brno (Czech Republic), and from the Deri Museum of Debrecen (Hungary).
